ERA Pupils support the work of the RSPB

'Everyone is a friend to nature, all its creatures and their habitats.' (An extract from ERA's Eco Code written by pupils in 2024)
With birds across the country facing so many challenges and declines, we wanted to play our part in helping the RSPB's national effort to monitor bird species and thereby contribute to their conservation efforts.
Previously prepared with an assembly, our eager pupils set off in small mixed-age groups to various locations around the school playground including our science garden. They looked around and up to the sky, quietly chatting about what they noticed about the birds they saw, checking their identification sheets and recording their findings on survey sheets.
The big winners were Black-headed Gulls, Starlings, Carrion Crows, Blackbirds and Wood Pigeons; then came a few Magpies, Robins, Great and Blue Tits, House Sparrows and even a couple of Chaffinches and Wagtails.
An enjoyable way of connecting with nature and learning about birds, which has definitely inspired some of our pupils to continue to tell us about what birds they see around us.
And to accompany the birdwatch, our Squirrels Club children made some imaginary birds from wool throughout the week and were very proud of their creations!
